HISTORY

The King’s Hawaiian tradition began in 1950, when founder Robert Taira opened his first bakery in Hilo, Hawaii. After several years of success, Robert moved his family business to Honolulu and opened that city’s first combination Bakery & Restaurant, which became extremely popular. In addition, Robert’s unique Portuguese sweet bread received a great deal of attention from residents and visitors alike. This came to be known as King’s Hawaiian Bread.

We introduced King’s Hawaiian to the mainland in 1977 when we opened our first factory in Torrance, CA and began bread production. Soon after, we expanded our bakery line and began distributing to grocery stores throughout the United States.

In 1988, our full-service Bakery & Restaurant opened in Torrance. The unique selection of Hawaiian local food and traditional American dishes, as well as our fresh baked goods, quickly made King’s Hawaiian one of the South Bay’s most popular Bakery & Restaurants.

In 2001 we opened The Local Place in Torrance. The Local Place is everything you love about King’s Hawaiian in a faster, more casual format. The Local Place Bakery offers a wide selection of our most popular bakery items from King’s Hawaiian Bakery & Restaurant, including our famous Hawaiian Paradise Cake. Whether it’s your favorite place to eat breakfast on your way to work or dinner on the way home, The Local Place Bakery & Café offers great-tasting Hawaiian food that’s perfect for people on the go.
